Can I carry a gun in SC for my protection legally?
You can get your Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) and carry one concealed on your person for your protection.
Are there any other fees besides the CWP class fee?
The class fee of $95 includes everything you need with the exception of a copy of your drivers license and the $50 money order/cashiers check to SLED.
How old do you have to be to get your CWP?
21 years old.
How old do you have to be to take the CWP class?
You can take the CWP class within 3 years of sending in application. We suggest not taking the class until you're 20 just in case the laws change within the 3 years so you won't have to take the class over.
How old do you have to be to own a handgun?
You can own a handgun in SC at 18. You have to buy it from an individual and not a store at this point though.
What do I need to bring to class?
Class fee, pistol with50 rounds of ammo, eye and ear protection, and Drivers License.
Are the CWP classes 1 day classes?
Yes, we complete the class and range in the same day, but can work around small groups.
Do you do the fingerprinting?
Yes.
Do you send our SLED packet in for us?
No.
Will I have to do anything else outside of the class?
No, our classes include everything you have to do to obtain your South Carolina Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP).
Do I have to own a gun to take the CWP class?
No, we have some you can rent plus the cost of ammo.
Do I have to qualify with the gun I'm going to carry?
No, SLED does not require it.
Do we break for lunch?
Yes, normally between the class room and range portion.
Do I need to know anything about guns to take class?
We educate the parts and workings of pistols as well as position and grip, but you should have a working knowledge of how to shoot. The CWP class is designed to educate the student on the laws pertaining to carrying a firearm, and the range portion is to show us that you can safely use a firearm. We do instruct in basic "this is a pistol" classes.
Will the class be watching me shoot?
Yes, but from a distance. We normally have about 5 shooters at a time so that we can safely supervise.
How long have you been a firearms instructor?
Since 2012, but have carried for over 15 years.
Do you teach us the test?
NO, we go over everything that is on the written and live fire test and much more. We teach you what you need to know in the real world to carry your Concealed Weapon and be safe in handling, defending with it, and legally carrying it.
Do you just talk the whole class or do you use other means of teaching?
We use power point with lots of pictures, slides, and videos to help in our instruction as well as plenty of demonstration to aid in our class instruction.
Is the written test real hard?
If you pay attention during the class and take notes you should not have a problem passing the written test. We go over everything on the test throughout the day. The test is closed book but taking notes always helps you remember and also gives you a chance to review before the test as well as when you get your CWP in the mail.
